It’s Official: 15 Digg Engineers Are Joining Washington Post’s SocialCode

Another bit of closure for Digg as the company continues to look for a buyer of its technology and its site: its engineering team is joining SocialCode, the social media advertising and analytics subsidiary of the Washington Post Company.

We first wrote about the engineers getting hired by WaPo on Monday, when rumors began to swirl that the newspaper group had bought Digg. Now the news has been made official with a post on Digg’s blog by CEO Matt Williams.

The Washington Post notes that in all, 15 engineers are joining the team. Among them, Alan Lippman, Digg’s VP of advertising products, becomes the chief scientist at SocialCode. Software developer Will Larson will become director of engineering.

SocialCode, which launched in January 2011, has offices in San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, DC, and Digg’s engineers will “augment” that team, which Williams says “shares our same values & culture.”

“At Digg, we have been studying social media since its inception. From Digg Social Reader to Digg Ads, we established a new paradigm for content and advertising on the web. Joining SocialCode felt like a natural next step,” Williams writes.

Products that the new team will likely work on include Trove, SocialCode’s social news platform, which powers Washington Post’s own Social Reader and Personal Post. The addition of new talent may also see SocialCode extending its reach in developing products for third parties beyond the Washington Post’s walls, although this isn’t made clear in the blog post.

(Update: A WaPo spokesperson says that SocialCode engineers will only be working on SocialCode itself — it’s a social advertising agency that works across social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, not the Washington Post itself. Trove, Social Reader and Personal Post are products of WaPo Labs, another subsidiary of the Washington Post Company.)

The Digg technical staff will be integrated with and augment SocialCode’s existing engineering team with development offices in San Francisco, Seattle and Washington D.C.

Mythical HTC Droid Incredible 4G appears, disappears

Looks like the rumored HTC Droid Incredible 4G is getting more tangible every day. Reportedly, a detailed product page for the fabled device appeared on Verizon’s DroidDoes Web site and was then cruelly yanked away.

Android enthusiast blog Android Central noticed the gaffe by Big Red, and plenty of sites followed suit, posting images of the device along with the phone’s key specs. In a nutshell, if this latest leak is legit then the hot handset will boast a 1.2GH dual-core processor, 4-inch qHD Super LCD screen, Android 4.0 ICS, and HTC Sense 4.

Likely the best update, though, is the Incredible 4G’s LTE connection, which its predecessor, the HTC Droid Incredible 2, noticeably lacked. The leaked price of $299 seems very steep to me and frankly the HTC One S (T-Mobile) with its all-metal chassis and AMOLED screen looks like a better buy at $199.

In any case, the first Droid Incredible broke ground by squeezing swift Android performance into a very compact package that sported a wildly ridged back battery plate. Let’s hope this possible new Incredible lives up to its potential.

The Ratings Game: EBay tears it up following earnings, outlook

> SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — EBay Inc. shares climbed more than 13% Thursday, closing at their highest point in more than four years as investors cheered the online auctioneer’s quarterly results and outlook.

At least three analysts raised their ratings on the company’s stock.

EBay  rose $4.75 a share to close up to $40.62, the first time the stock ended above $40 a share since October 2007. The impetus for the gains was the company’s fiscal first-quarter earnings and its full-year forecast, which eBay reported late Wednesday.

EBay reported a profit of $570 million, or 44 cents a share, on $3.3 billion in revenue. During the same period a year ago, the company earned $476 million, or 36 cents a share, on sales of $2.55 billion. Excluding one-time items, the company would have earned $725 million, or 55 cents a share.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet Research had forecast eBay to earn 52 cents a share on $3.15 billion in revenue.

Macquarie Capital analyst Ben Schachter raised his rating on eBay’s stock to outperform from neutral, saying the results show better business execution at the company.

“We believe that product improvements, solid business management and strong [industry] tailwinds from mobile are driving [increases] to estimates,” Schachter wrote in a research note. He also set a $45 price target on eBay’s stock.

During its first quarter, eBay said sales from its PayPal online-payments business rose 32% from the year-ago period to $1.31 billion, and its Marketplaces retail sales totaled $1.73 billion, up 11% from last year’s first quarter.

Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray highlighted eBay’s PayPal gains, saying that the business “gives it a leg up” in the company’s efforts to expand more into mobile-payment services.

“Given PayPal is already an adopted platform, the incremental effort needed for a consumer to use the mobile aspect of PayPal is less,” the analyst wrote in a research note. Munster also raised his rating on eBay to outperform from neutral, and raised his price target on the stock to $50 a share from $36.

Benchmark Capital’s Daniel Kurnos raised his rating on eBay to buy from hold and also raised his price target on the stock to $45 a share from $37. In addition to growth in eBay’s payments business, Kurnos highlighted the performance of the Marketplaces retail business and believes the gains there are sustainable through the rest of the year.

For its fiscal second quarter, eBay forecast earnings of 49 cents to 51 cents a share, or 53 cents to 55 cents a share excluding one-time items, on revenue in a range of $3.25 billion to $3.35 billion. Analysts had forecast earnings excluding one-time items of 55 cents a share on $33.6 billion in sales.

EBay’s full-year outlook was seen as upbeat. The company forecast earnings excluding one-time items of $2.30 to $2.35 a share on revenue between $13.8 billion and $14.1 billion. Wall Street analysts had earlier estimated eBay would earn $2.30 a share on $13.85 billion in revenue for the entire year.

Instituting Programs That Prevent Child Sexual Abuse Should Be Top…

>Jacksonville Beach, Florida (PRWEB) April 18, 2012 “One of the top priorities for Duval County’s Public School Superintendent must be to undertake an aggressive education and prevention program to prevent child sexual abuse by those entrusted with their care.”, according to Don Dymer, president and chief executive officer of SingleSource Services company and sponsor of the Protect the Children Conference held at the University of North Florida earlier this year http://reeny.net/earn-safety-degree.html. The Florida Times Union last week reported that parents, teachers, students and community representatives gathered together for their first of three meetings to discuss what attributes and skills should be required for Duval’s next Public School Superintendent, commented Don Dymer. “The article referenced that people in the meetings were talking about how students will be treated in the classroom which is critical. But despite the headline news of increased child sexual abuse by teachers, coaches and volunteers, there is no mention of bringing on board an individual who understands that if we are to ensure our children’s educational development, we must dedicate ourselves to providing an environment safe from child predators– that is part of how children are treated in the classroom as well as in all areas of the school. Our kids are reading on-line stories about situations like Sandusky, they hear about teachers abusing children on the news. We must provide a sense of calm for our children that their schools are safe.” Not only is the emotional toll great, but the financial toll can be staggering. Recently direct costs paid by a South Carolina school for one case was reported to be $5.1 million*. Dymer stated, “I wholeheartedly agree with Chair Betty Burney’s comment that we must find a ‘transformational leader” for Duval County public schools. An integral part of that transformation must be an individual who reco
