Iona College Students APPly Classroom-Based Learnings to Launch Successful Music Application

Inspired by an elective course that they took in iPhone/iPad applications development, two talented and enterprising undergraduate students majoring in computer science at Iona College have taken their idea for a new music app to the marketplace FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  Nicholas Krzemineski and Sean O’SheaPRLog (Press Release) – Mar 09, 2012 – Contact Information: Dawn Insanalli, Director of Public RelationsIona College 715 North Avenue New Rochelle, NY 10801Phone: 914.637.2726    Email: dinsanalli@iona.edu(Available for Download in the iTunes App Store)New Rochelle, NY (February 2012) – Inspired by an elective course that they took in iPhone/iPad applications development, two talented and enterprising undergraduate students majoring in computer science at Iona College have taken their idea for a new music app to the marketplace.Nicholas Krzemineski ’12 of White Plains, who will graduate this June and Sean O’Shea ’13 of Monroe, New York are encouraged by the initial market response to the iTraxs app they developed in the classroom. Available for purchase on the Apple Store for $.99, iTraxs allows the listener to select songs and other music from their music library on their iPhone and play only their favorite parts. The user can listen to the edited music before adding it to their iTraxs library. The iTraxs app is the first product that the two young entrepreneurs and business partners developed under their newly-established app development company, Majestyk Apps LLC. Apple approved and accepted their app within a week after they submitted it for review under the company’s strict guidelines. Introduced on January 7, iTraxs has currently attracted about 450 subscribers, including users from nine different countries. Initially, the app was averaging 10 downloads a day but has now increased to about 18.The students’ business goal is that this app will be used to convert songs into ringtones of mobile devices. Ringtones is a new and fast growing sector which represented about 42% of the $14.4 billion mobile music industry in 2010, according to Informa Telecoms & Media. For each $.99 iTraxs download, Majestyk, which is wholly owned by the two students, nets $.70.The two young entrepreneurs specifically credit their professor, Lubomir Ivanov, PhD, who taught them the course for equipping them with the tools they needed to create the music app. This is only the second time that the course has been offered at Iona. They also praise the faculty in the computer science department for helping them to launch the product by connecting them with their technology business contacts.Initially they did not plan to start the company. However, they moved quickly when they realized that that their app had never been created and might have significant market potential. More than two months of hard work and programming went into iTracks. A few weeks ago, a newer version of the product, 1.1 was released. The entrepreneurs are looking to partner with a company that aligns with their business goal of making successful apps for Apple’s operating system. They also plan to release the app in multiple languages to capture the burgeoning international market. While other colleges offer similar classes, Dr. Ivanov developed this course in response to student interest. Future offerings may include a course on the Android platform and other mobile applications.Dr. Ivanov said, “The vision and initiative of these students has clearly demonstrated the value of higher education as an incubator for tomorrow’s new ideas. Nick and Sean have applied the knowledge gained in the classroom to achieve commercial success.”To unleash the market potential of iTraxs and other products they hope to develop, the students acknowledge they will need to learn marketing and other aspects of running a successful business. The two bring complementary skills to the partnership. Nick handles the hard-coding, back-end of the app, but he is moving from the development scene to overseeing sales. O’Shea handles more of the web-based side of app and its images. Krzemineski, 21, had left Iona in Fall 2008 to enlist in active duty in the military. He had completed a tour and came back to Iona in Fall 2009 since he had maintained matriculation. O’Shea, 20, originally planned to be an engineer. Both are in the five-year computer science master’s program. For their undergraduate degree, they are earning a bachelor’s of science degree that is recognized by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET (Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology).Regarding their learning experience at Iona, Nick said: “iPhone/iPad applications development is a growing field and the sky’s the limit. I strongly recommend any student to take this course.” O’Shea added: “This has been a huge learning experience, thanks to the strong computer science professors at Iona.”Founded in 1940, Iona College is a four-year private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers and American Catholic higher education. It is a diverse community of learners and scholars dedicated to academic excellence and the values of justice, peace and service. Iona offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as Master of Arts, Master of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees and numerous advanced certificate programs. Samsungs AllShare Play pushes pictures from phone to cloud and TV

Samsung showed off its revamped AllShare Play app, which allows users to store pictures and video on cloud-based servers or send them to Samsung HDTVs remotely.

Here at Samsung’s product showcase in New York, multimedia connectivity played a big role. The company talked up its rebranded AllShare Play technology, not to be confused with Google Play, which was previously called AllShare http://gnewstoday.info/finding-out-about-online-aviation-degrees/.

Essentially AllShare Play allows owners of Samsung tablets and smartphones, Samsung Galaxy Tabs and Galaxy Nexus devices for instance, to push media files such as pictures to servers in the cloud. Samsung says it will save up to 5GB of data for users of the free AllShare Play service.

Samsung also partnered with remote file storage software maker SugarSync. As a result, AllShare Play can also upload files directly from Samsung mobile devices to SugarSync’s servers if you have access to a SugarSync account. To be clear, current Samsung 2012 HDTVs already have the SugarSync app installed and users can get much of the same functionality just by downloading the SugarSync app from the Android Market.

This is the first time, however, Samsung has demoed this version of the AllShare Play app, which is still in development but expected to become available “soon.” Another compelling capability is SmartView, which lets you mirror what’s being displayed, and heard, on compatible Samsung TVs to enjoy on tablets and smartphones around the house. All devices need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network for this to happen, though, so a Slingbox competitor it is not.

Check out the video below to see AllShare Play and SmartView in action.

Scoop: Facebook To Speed Up Biz Analytics Tool Insights To Report In Real-Time

Facebook’s analytics tool Insights will soon begin showing Page performance data in real-time or near real-time rather than on average 48 hour delay, according to our sources. Work on preparing for the switch to real-time reporting is apparently the cause of recent atypically long delays of 4 days or more, chronicled by one-off website WhyIsFacebookInsightsNotWorking.com.

Impressions, reach, negative feedback, “people talking about this”, and demographics of engagers could all start showing up live in the graphical Insights interface as well as the API. Real-time data reporting in Insights could give businesses the understanding necessary to drive higher ROI, which could attract more brands and advertisers to Facebook in the lead up to its IPO.

[Correction: This article originally stated that real-time Insights would be announced at Wednesday's Facebook Marketing Conference in New York City. I've learned the timetable for the announcement and release isn't confirmed at this time, so it could be announced at FMC or further down the road. The product is in the works, though.]

Right now, the only metrics that are reported in near real-time are for offsite social plugins, and Likes, comments, and shares on a Page’s posts to the news feed. It can be 12 hours to more than 2 days before Page posts start displaying reach and people talking about this to admins, and before admins can check Insights for dozens of other metrics such as link clicks, and impressions of the post driven by Sponsored Story ads. By then it may be too late to effectively launch a new ad campaign or delete and repost a link update with a different headline, caption, or image.

While businesses can’t edit previously published posts like on Google+, there are many new tactics real-time reporting will allow. If a Page’s admin see that their latest post is causing lots of users to Unlike their Page, they could delete it before it does more harm. Live impression data could help them determine the optimal time to post. Immediate “people talking about this” data could give marketers a sense of a post’s virality, and indicate if they should modify content or apps they link to. Google Analytics recently moved to real-time reporting of site visitors after previously serving data 3 hours to a day late. After the update, Insights won’t seem so slow by comparison.

Making real-time Insights data available through the API “will give Page owners an opportunity to see how their Page actually lives and breathes,” says Facebook analytics tool provider EdgeRank Checker‘s founder Chad Wittman. “It’s up to us as tool developers to turn that data into something awesome and present it in relevant actionable analytics.”

Meet a retired World of Warcraft server

How much would you pay for a server that hosted some of your most cherished gaming experiences?

The ultimate wall art for the geek cave.

A game like World of Warcraft requires several thousand servers to operate the hundreds of online realms within its ecosystem. Earlier this year, Blizzard Entertainment auctioned off several of those server blades “used during World of Warcraft’s early days.”

A Reddit post brought up the subject again recently, and contains a few pictures of a server blade used for the European server Sunstrider from February 27, 2005 to August 24, 2010. There’s little doubt that countless gamers spent thousands, if not millions, of hours playing during that time frame. A special clear enclosure reveals the innards of the server, which contains 6 gigabytes of RAM (DDR-400MHz). It did not come with the original hard drives.

A server to some, but to others, a sentiment.

There is also a plaque on the top left, full of reprinted developer signatures and a special inscription: “Blizzard Entertainment has carefully preserved and archived our retired server blades, releasing only a limited number for a noble cause. To us, this server blade is more than just hardware: within the circuits and hard drive, a world of magic, adventure, and friendship thrived. From fishing in quiet lakes to defeating Arthas in Icecrown Citadel, this blade was home to thousands of immersive experiences across the world of Azeroth and beyond. We thank you for the safekeeping of this important part of history.”

The server sold at auction for $280. As for me, after spending the equivalent of months playing World of Warcraft (T6 Shadow Priest), I’m not so sure I could spend any more money (or time) on the game.

Obama Applauds Italian Leader’s Economic Reforms

President Barack Obama has praised Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Monti for his efforts to pull his country out of financial distress.  After replacing Silvio Berlusconi the past November, Monit has implemented tough austerity measures designed to cut Italy’s massive deficit and restore its economic health. After meeting in the Oval Office, President Obama expressed his support for Monti’s bold action.  “I just want to say how much we appreciate the strong start that he has embarked on, and the very effective measures that he is promoting inside of Italy,” Obama said.Monti is in the United States to promote his economic plan and to attract investors to Italy, which remains $2.5 trillion in debt. The president said his visitor has made progress toward restoring confidence in Italy’s economy inside and outside the country.“Not only has he boosted confidence within Italy about a reform agenda, but he has also been able to generate confidence throughout Europe and in the marketplace that Italy has a plan that takes seriously its fiscal responsibilities, but also emphasizes the need for structural reforms that can promote growth,” Obama added. The prime minister has said all Italians must make sacrifices, and he has given up his own salary as prime minister and economy minister. He thanked Obama for his support, and said his countrymen are getting the message.“The lines towards budgetary consolidation and structural reforms, however painful they may be in the short term, seem to be widely understood by the Italian public opinion,” said Monti. The president welcomed Italy’s support for U.S.-led sanctions against Iran for its nuclear activities. Obama also thanked the prime minister for supporting Washington’s policy condemning what he called the “outrageous bloodshed” in Syria. In addition, the president expressed gratitude to Monti for Italy’s partnership in last year’s NATO campaign to remove Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.  Obama said he intends to work closely with Italy – Libya’s one-time colonial ruler – to help strengthen Libya’s transitional government.  The president said relations between the U.S. and Italy have “never been stronger,” and he said Americans have “a deep and special connection with the Italian people.”
