Make the follow-up sound like you, not a template. Add any context that helps.

Optional: details you remember, the tone you want, or what to emphasize.

AI is optional. When you use it, the text above is sent to Anthropic's Claude to write the result. We don't store it and it isn't used for training. Check the result before you use it.

When to send each follow-up

  • Thank-you note: the same day as the interview.
  • Status check: one to two business days after the date they gave you, or about a week after the interview if they gave none.
  • Second follow-up: about a week after the first, if you still haven't heard.
  • Competing offer: as soon as you have a deadline, so the employer has time to respond.

Tips

  • Reply in the existing email thread so the recruiter has context.
  • Keep it to a few sentences and end with a clear question.
  • Keep applying while you wait. Tracking every application in one place makes it easy to see who to follow up with.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait to follow up after an interview?

Wait until the date they said you would hear back, then give it one or two more business days. If they gave no timeline, follow up about a week after the interview.

Who should I send the follow-up email to?

The recruiter or the person who has been coordinating your interviews. They know where the decision stands; interviewers often don't.

How many times can I follow up?

Two follow-ups about a week apart is reasonable. After that, assume the process has stalled, keep applying elsewhere, and leave the door open.

Should I mention another offer?

Yes, if it's real and you'd prefer this job. It's useful information for the employer and a common reason for them to speed up.
