How the commute cost is calculated
- Fuel per day = round-trip distance ÷ fuel economy × fuel price (for kilometres: distance × litres per 100 km ÷ 100 × price).
- Daily cost = fuel + parking + tolls, or your round-trip fares if you take transit.
- Yearly cost = daily cost × office days per week × working weeks.
- Time = door-to-door minutes × commuting days ÷ 60.
Use it to compare jobs
Commuting is a cost of the job, paid from after-tax income. When you compare an office role with a remote one, subtract the yearly commute cost from the office salary, and consider the hours you would get back. The job offer comparison calculator has a commute line for exactly this.
A hybrid schedule cuts the cost in proportion: three office days instead of five lowers both the money and the hours by 40%.
