How experience is calculated

For each job, the calculator counts from the start date to the end of the last day, inclusive. July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 is exactly one year.

Jobs that overlap are merged first, so concurrent work counts once. Calendar spans are added up, carrying 30 remaining days to a month and 12 months to a year. This is a display convention; the day count is exact and decimal years use 365.25 days per year.

When you need the number

  • Job applications that ask for years of experience in total, or with a specific skill (add only the relevant jobs).
  • Resumes and LinkedIn summaries, e.g. “Backend engineer with 6+ years of experience”.
  • Experience summaries, using the counting convention requested by the employer. Use the original dates when a form requires exact dates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my total work experience?

Add up the time between the start and end date of each job. Where two jobs overlap, count the shared period once. The calculator does both and shows the total in years, months and days.

How do I write experience in years and months on a resume or form?

Round to what the form asks for. 4 years 7 months can be written as 4.6 years, or as “4+ years”. Use the exact figure when an application asks for months.

Do internships and part-time jobs count as experience?

They usually count as experience, but some employers only count full-time work after graduation. Add them as separate rows so you can show both totals.

How are overlapping jobs counted?

Once. If you freelanced while employed, the overlapping months are not added twice, matching how most employers and experience letters count them.
